Papers
Initially inspired by the mundane task of going though and processing paperwork, Papers explores numerous aspects of language, layout and imagery, together with clear references to musicality in its technique. It explores the techniques of concrete poetry and appears a kind of musical or textual score to be interpreted rather than read.
Over a six-month period, James & Ruth exchanged many versions of the poem containing additions and revisions. The idea of paperwork was both discarded and expanded, as specific details took on greater importance. In some sense the poem started as a poem about paperwork and became a poem about enlightenment!
In its current form, the poem's content - characters, words, or discrete sentence fragments - begins to achieve a cumulative effect as the poem develops. As each batch of thought or imagery filters down through the page, the importance of each pause and line break increases. They become akin to pauses for breath, or changes of mind, and the text begins to read like a transcription of consciousness. The writing layout becomes a scroll that is patterned like a breathing chart, designed to get you through marked stretches of time.
Since this is a work in progress, the task will be to develop the layout of the poem into a finished, laid-out work. Additionally, aspects of the draft / redraft process will be presented.
In Make we show the work in progress of selected projects exploring the current theme. The Studio, a laboratory for creation and documentation, allows the artist to update their work. In Show we present the finished projects alongside given submissions.
All finalised content can be added to private collections in My Dispatx, providing a personalised content experience.
In this short tour we will show you how you can interact with the artists, create private collections, make and organize your tags, and investigate over 100 projects immediately available to you.
The current theme in exploration is Eminent Domain - seventeen projects have been selected and their progress can be seen by clicking on Make.
Users are invited to converse directly with the artists and other Dispatx users via comments and threaded discussions. In this way, you become a part of the artists' creative method - the organizing process that translates creative vision into creative product.
Content in Show is presented as a linear narrative - constantly running genetic algorithms analyse your behaviour and show the projects in the order most likely to appeal. Adding descriptive tags allows you to move in and out of this order, creating your own individual narrative.
